Legend says it took the architect… Morozzo della Rocca, a 30’s adherent to the Italian il Movimento Moderno… his engineer & builders and his marble & stone masons three attempts to successfully build this one staircase. Difficult to suspend from a cantilever an oval flight of stairs. Seven times! It is one of two such spiral staircases in a 1930’s palazzo, once intended to be a five-star hotel for passengers arriving or departing on ocean liners. The Belle Epoch ship’s terminal is directly across the street. But, WWII happened. The City of Genoa bought the unfinished hulk for offices in the early 1950s. Today, it is an apartment building.
